Hamilton Down Payment Assistance Program

The City of Hamilton is providing financial assistance in the form of a forgivable loan to be used by an eligible renter applicant toward a down payment for a new or resale house.

Notice: Available funding has been used up, however, applications will still be accepted for the wait list.

Who Can Apply

Eligible applicants must:


be 18 years or older
be renters who do not currently own a home or property
be legal residents of Canada
have this home as their one and only residence
have an annual household gross income at or below $65,000

Note: a household can be defined as the individual making the application; any person the individual is living with in a spousal relationship, including same beautiful spousal relationship

Return your completed application along with all necessary supporting documentation to:

Supporting documents includes copies of your photo identification to confirm date of birth; a current rent receipt; verification of your income and assets and mortgage pre-approval.

Your application will be reviewed by Housing Division Staff. Once you have been found to be eligible for the Program, you will be issued a letter of conditional eligibility, subject to purchasing conditions (e.g. price of house).

Start looking for your home. Your house must be purchased in the City of Hamilton and valued up to $250,000.

Remember Offers to Purchase are conditional on funding. If Provincial funding runs out before you are approved, there is no guarantee of a home ownership loan.

Provide a copy of your conditional Offer to Purchase on a qualifying home immediately to the Housing Division in order to confirm funding availability.

Accepted offers will be received and funding provided on a “first come, first served basis”. Accepted offers will not be considered complete and will not be funded until all supporting documentation has been satisfactorily received.

Home buyers sign Loan Agreement with the City of Hamilton as Service Manager and arrangements will be made to transfer the funds on the date of closing.

On closing day, your lawyer will receive the approved funding from the City of Hamilton as Service Manager.
